Police ambushed in Garissa

Al Shabaab militia on Monday night ambushed police officers and burnt their four vehicles in Yumbis. It is not known whether there we any deaths but officers in Garissa told the Star no deaths occurred. Police had gone to rescue four cops who were hit by a landmine.

The officers were on their way to Yumbis area of Fafi sub-county when the incident occurred.

Fafi sub-county Commissioner Geofrey Taragon who confirmed the incident said that the four officers were rushed to the Amuma dispensary where they were treated and discharged.

He said that upon reaching Yarey area in Yumbis, their vehicle drove over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which had been planted in the middle of the road. The vehicle was thrown off the road by the impact of the explosion.

He however said that contrary to earlier reports no officer had been killed in the incident.

“The officers from the Rural Border Patrol Unit were coming from Fafi center and heading to the border town of Amuma when the incident occurred. Fortunately the impact was not very big otherwise it could have been much worse,” Tergon said.

Area MCA Mahat Osman said the impact of the explosion extensively damaged the police vehicle.

The incident comes barely two days after some 40 heavily armed suspected al-Shabaab members invaded Yumbis village in Fafi sub-county  and "lectured" frightened villagers from dusk to dawn.

Residents who spoke to Meru Times said the militia men forced them to listen for several hours to their tirade against the Kenyan government, local civil servants and security officials on Thursday night before disappearing in the morning.
They are then said to have fled to a nearby thicket three kilometres from Yumbia town.

A similar group on Wednesday night carried out a similar lecture in villages at the border in Hulugho sub-county.
